A contemporary London townhouse delivered whole-house: a dark-ceilinged reception, a sculptural staircase, and bathrooms lined floor-to-ceiling in Arabescato marble. Restrained where it should be quiet, uncompromising where it counts. These are photographs of the completed house.
A tall, narrow London townhouse gives you volume but very little width. Stacked bathrooms and a staircase eat the plan, and every extra material makes the section feel busier and tighter than it is.
The palette was cut back to almost nothing — pale plaster, pale carpet, one marble — so the eye travels the full height of the house without catching. The marble is then used without restraint in the wet rooms, floor to ceiling and across the reveals, so the small rooms become the memorable ones. Lowering the reception ceiling into a dark plane makes the room feel wider, not lower.
A calm, contemporary family house where the drama is concentrated in a few rooms rather than smeared across all of them.
Concealed perimeter cove lighting throughout, so almost no fitting is visible; wall lights flank the mirrors at face height; a rooflight drops daylight into the top-floor shower room.
